Weekend Wintry Storm Leaves Sierra With Thick Coat Of Snow

SODA SPRINGS (CBS13) – This winter blast across the high Sierra left some drivers calling for a tow in the snow.

Others simply pulled over to let the worst of this storm pass – and then there were those who proceeded over the summit at their own peril.

"Oh this is the worst in easily six, seven years at least," said driver Garrett Glenn, who was trying to make his way over the summit.

The freezing combination of ice and snow made travel treacherous. The storm made getting to the Summit Restaurant in Soda Springs no easy task, but owner Maria Montano says she's expecting it to lead to more sales in the coming days.

"When we're in the middle of the storm, it's not the best time to come up and enjoy the snow," Montano said. "But it's the blue birds that come the days after, and the following weekend."

A little ways down the mountain in Nyack, the lower snow made for perfect weekend family fun.

The Davi family drove here from Antioch. They timed their trip to get here when the snow was dumping.

"This is it right here, this is what we came up here for," David Davi said. "[A] little snow fun."

The weekend Sierra snow storm turned hillsides into playgrounds for those willing to brave the travel trouble.
