MODESTO (CBS13) – Detectives are investigating the shooting death of a man at the hand of officers in downtown Modesto.
The shooting happened around 2:10 p.m. Thursday in the 800 block of 10th Street. Officers attempted to stop a man who was riding a bicycle; he reportedly ignored the request and rode into a parking garage, and as officers approached, allegedly pulled out a gun and wouldn’t put it down, according to a Modesto Police Department statement.
Officers shot at the man several times, hitting him.
Police and fire personnel tried life-saving procedures on the man until he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he later died.
Neither of the officers were injured and have been placed on paid administrative leave.
It’s unknown why officers initially tried to stop the man.
Modesto Police Department has launched a criminal and administrative investigation while the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is conducting their own independent investigation.
