Wait Finally Over For 'Star Wars' Fans In Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - It didn't disappoint. That's the word from Star Wars superfans who finally got to see one of the most talked about films of the year, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The movie premiered in theatres nationwide Thursday at 7 p.m. Fans are still out in force lining up for packed screenings.

Tickets sold out months ago when they first went on sale in October. People walking out of the 7 p.m. showing seem pleased.

"I took off work to be here," said a fan.

They have been waiting a decade to see Star Wars episode seven come alive.

"Well, I grew up on this. Born in 1971, and in 1977 I was six years old and watched Darth Vader come through the walls, and from there, I was a fan," he said.

"It's just coming to new perspective of film…end of decade beginning of new one," said a fan.

But that sense of nostalgia is just part of it.

"This seems like a return to form -- especially with the old cast combining with the new cast makes it feel like Star Wars felt like when we were kids," said movie reviewer Ken Jackman.

From the homemade costumes to long lines for the daylong marathons of the original six movies, the science fiction thing is already setting records.

"It's the greatest science fiction thing ever," said a fan.

The "force awakens" has sold more tickets on Fandago than any film in the site's history before it even opened.

Like tickets, a local comic store can't keep Star Wars toys on the shelf.

"People will pay what they need to pay for the things they want for their collection," said Dave Downey, owner of World's Best Comics.

So far, no one has shelled out the money for a life-size storm trooper going for $2,300 -- no discounts.

The movie is breathing new life into a franchise that seems to have conquered the universe.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" plays all weekend at the downtown Sacramento IMAX. There are still some tickets available. Director J.J. Abrams has said he prefers fans watch the film in IMAX.
