Police Take Part In Active Shooter Training At School In Stockton

STOCKTON (CBS13) - Local law enforcement officials are getting ready for an emergency at a Stockton high school.

While students are on break, agencies are training for an active shooter.

"Normally in these active-shooter situations, you may see a SWAT team show up however when only have two officers you have to make do with what you have," said Jim Bock, a San Joaquin Delta College Police Department spokesperson.

It can happen anywhere, at any time, an active shooter targeting innocent victims.

Officers have to be ready.

"Because the reality is we're not going to be able to wait when seconds count," said Bock.

A joint training exercise between San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton Unified School District, and University of the Pacific police departments was carried out recently. They are hoping to hunt down active shooters in the Stagg High School theater.

They can't wait for backup.

"So we focus on two-man up to four-man teams going in," said Bock.

In light of the recent shootings in Southern California and Paris, this training is crucial to saving lives.

"It brings it home, especially for us in the in the K-12 and up in the community college settings. It really brings it in the light with what happened up in Oregon and even the isolated incident that occurred in American River College in Sacramento," said Bock.

Even if they're outgunned, officers' focus is taking out the threat and learning from their mistakes.

"It's when they can learn that they can come out of the situation like this on top," he said. "Our main goal is to stop the killing from happening."
