Fire Destroys City Of Stockton's Christmas Tree

STOCKTON (CBS13) - The city of Stockton lost some of its Christmas cheer overnight after its official tree was destroyed by a fire.

Around 1:50 a.m. someone driving past the tree at Weber Point noticed the flames and called 911.

When firefighters arrived, they found the 35-foot tree mostly engulfed in flames. It is now a total loss.

The lights were donated by PG&E; the tree was also donated and a value estimated at $10,000.

Firefighters believe the fire was started by a short circuit; however, the official cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The city has owned the tree since 2006.

Editor's note: A Stockton city representative previously said the tree was valued at $35,000.
