Sacramento's Plastic Bag Ban Goes Into Effect January 1

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Starting January 1, there will be a new change at Sacramento grocery stores: plastic bags are banned.

B.Y.O.B. in Sacramento now also stands for bring your own bag. Come Friday you'll have to remember to bring something with you to the store before you can get our without an extra cost.

When we spotted shopper Nannette Ganwellus leaving the Nugget Market, she was awash in plastic bags, but she was aware of the upcoming bag ban and was prepared.

"Yeah it's in my car, but I know it's not due today," she said. And she even showed us proof.

"I'm prepared, see…!" she said.

Shoppers will soon have to break out those reusable bags January 1 when most groceries large pharmacies and convenient stores will no longer be able to give them out.

The Sacramento city council voted last March to put the ban in place in 2016 joining 145 other cities throughout California. Discarded bags waterways and are easily blown around.

If you forget to bring a reusable bag, you can get one but you'll have to pay.

Small plastic bags for produce at the meat counter and for bulk items will still be available and at no charge. Stores are helping customers with the transition.

And while many shoppers understand and accept the ban, remembering to bring them along for the shopping trip may take a few times.
