Police: Speed Likely Played Role In Crash That Killed Del Oro High School Football Player

ROCKLIN (CBS13) — Rocklin Police say speed may have played a factor in the death of a Del Oro High School student on Saturday.
Ronny Andrews, 18, died when the car he was in crashed into a tree. It's not known what caused the accident that claimed the life of the high-school senior, but neighbors say drivers regularly reach high speeds along this busy roadway.
Rocklin Police say Andrews' vehicle was traveling north on Park Drive near Villa Serena Circle when it lost control and hit a tree about 10:45 p.m. on Saturday. Officers found the driver dead. A passenger was taken to the hospital.
One of those coming to remember Andrews today was his football coach Michael Gallagher. He came with his family to say a prayer.
"They're dealing with something I can't imagine dealing with losing a son this young," he said.
The father of the passenger who is hospitalized but said to recover saw the two boys leave his home earlier that night.
Neighbors tell CBS13 cars regularly reach speeds double the speed limit along this area of Park Drive. Investigators say speed was likely a factor but continue to investigate.
Andrews and his teammates had just recently celebrated a C-I-F state championship. Football coach Michael Gallagher brought his family to say a prayer.
His mother and brother spoke out over the weekend mourning the young man who dreamed of joining the military after graduation.
School officials are lining up counselors today to help students when they return to school tomorrow.
