UC Davis Hosts Community Forum On Zika Virus Concerns

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The UC Davis health System held a community forum today to help answer the public's questions and concerns about the Zika virus.

A panel of experts were on hand to explain the transmission, treatment and prevention of the disease.

Officials answered questions and gave out information on how to protect yourself when traveling to areas where the Zika virus is prevalent.

"Right now, Zika is a disease of travelers," said Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Children's Hospital.

Blumberg went on to say that the only way to get Zika virus in the US right now is through sexual transmission, noting that there have already been a handful of cases.

The Zika virus has been connected to reports of microcephaly in Brazil, which causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads and impaired cognition.
