Stockton Police Searching For Motive In Interstate 5 Shooting, Crash

STOCKTON (CBS13) — A man is behind bars and another is in the hospital after a shooting in Stockton on Interstate 5.

The gunfire started on I-5 at Montgomery Avenue and ended in a crash on I-5 near Benjamin Holt Drive.

Stockton Police are investigating but still don't have a motive.

"What we saw today, it was a brazen and bold shooting that happened during daytime hours in a residential neighborhood and we're very fortunate that no innocent bystanders got hurt," spokesman Joe Silva said.

It happened just after 1 p.m. on Montgomery Avenue in Stockton.

Stockton Police say it started as an argument between two people. Shots were fired and then two men in different cars fled the scene, driving southbound on I-5. Both crashed in different locations.

"Officers arrived on the scene to check for injuries, they located a man who had been shot," Silva said.

He and his female passenger were both taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect in the other car ran across five lanes of traffic on I-5, but officers took him into custody at a gas station near the highway.

"When they were searching the immediate area, they located a discarded handgun," Silva said.

Just along I-5, police found another weapon—a modified nail gun.

"Still actually trying to determine the exact motive on why investigators believe that both were shooting at each other," he said.

Silva says bullets flew into nearby houses but none caused any injuries.
