Parents Killed, Kids Survive Crash On Highway 4 In Discovery Bay

DISCOVERY BAY (CBS Sacramento) - Highway 4 is back open this morning after a deadly head-on crash forced it to close for several hours overnight.

According to authorities, the crash took place around 11:30 p.m. when a vehicle headed westbound crossed into the eastbound lane and struck another vehicle carrying three adults and three children.

The eastbound vehicle went off the road and ended up in the water. Two people in the vehicle were killed, but three others, who were in the backseat at the time, were rescued.

"All of the children are fine, suffered minor injuries," said Officer James Claire of the California Highway Patrol. "One of the adults was extricated, it appears he suffered minor injuries. But there were two individuals, a male and a female, that didn't survive."

The two people who were killed were parents of the children. The surviving adult and the children were taken to Sutter Hospital in Tracy.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, although investigators say speed may have played a factor.
