Pope Francis To Open Instagram Account

VATICAN CITY (CBS13) – Pope Francis will reportedly be opening his own Instagram account.

According to Religion News Service, the Pope will be posting his first photo on March 19. His account will be under the name "Franciscus."

Francis already has more than 27 million followers across nine official Twitter accounts.

The Vatican says the Pope's Instagram profile will focus on the main messages he's been espousing since his election.

"Being close to anyone who's suffering, for example. Tenderness, mercy, and lots of joy," Vatican spokesman Greg Burke told RNS.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom visited the Vatican and met with Pope Francis two weeks ago.

Pope Francis also recently met with the heads of two other big tech companies: Eric Schmidt of Alphabet Inc. (Google's parent company) and Tim Cook from Apple.
