Uber Launches New One-Way Service From San Diego To Mexico
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Ride-share company Uber is launching a cross-border service between the United States and Mexico.
The new Uber Passport service allows travelers to take a one-way journey from San Diego to Tijuana, located right over the Mexican border.
Uber officials say they chose the two cities because they are sister communities that are closely linked, CBS2 reported.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer praised the decision.
"Uber's new passport program highlights the best of what San Diego has to offer by offering one of the world's most innovative apps to bridge countries, businesses and families together in a way that has never been done before," Faulconer said.
To access the service, a new 'Passport' option will be available on their mobile app. According to the company's website, simply request a ride and wait for your Uber to come.
Prices begin at a four-dollar base rate, adding 30 cents per minute and $2.35 cents per mile. Uber will also charge a $20 border crossing rate. A trip from North Park to Zona Central will cost around $90, traveling from downtown San Diego to Tijuana Airport will cost you arounf $100 and a ride from Pacific Beach to Rosarito will be around $160.
Uber's service across the border is only offered from San Diego into Mexico. According to the company's website, travelers looking to get back into the country can only take a Mexican-based Uber to the United States border. Travelers can then walk across the pedestrian walkway to get back into the U.S.
All proper documentation is require while traveling across the border.
