After Repealing Nightclub Moratorium, Davis Readies For Picnic Day

DAVIS (CBS13) — Several years ago, it was a celebration known for out-of-control parties, chaos and crime.

With Davis' recent issues with nightclubs and bars, the question is what is the city doing for Picnic Day, which is just 10 days away.

Marlan Vargas at Burgers and Brew in Downtown Davis says even though Picnic Day is more than a week away, safety is already in the conversation for restaurant and bar owners.

"We try to make sure we have a fun environment, community and stuff like that," Vargas said. "Limited drinking, have the fun and control it as long as everybody enjoys the picnic day coming up soon."

Several years ago, Picnic Day was synonymous with a continuous flow of alcohol, out-of-control parties and crime in Davis. To tame those unbridled celebrations on Picnic Day, restaurant and bar owners sign a covenant to limit drinking and hours of operation.

Some businesses like Uncle Vito's say they're not going to be open because of the hassle.

UC Davis faculty member Andy Jones says whether it's Picnic Day or any other day, responsible celebrations begin and end with business owners.

The Davis City Council agrees. It lifted a ban on nightclubs on Tuesday that was put in place after a deadly stabbing at a nightclub in September. With the lifting of the ban, the city council also added tougher rules and requirements on safety and security.
