VIDEO: Large Sinkhole Opens Up On Central California City Street

MADERA (CBS13) - A large part of a Madera road will be closed for some time due to a sinkhole.

The scene is on Schnoor Avenue in between Howard Avenue and 5th Street. The sinkhole started opening up on Monday.

City of Madera Police say it isn't exactly known what caused the sinkhole, but recent rains are suspected.

A video showing the road collapsing into the sinkhole posted to the police department's Facebook page has garnered nearly 400,000 views as of Tuesday.

A large portion of the roadway on Schnoor Avenue, north of Howard Avenue and south of 4th Street, has collapsed. It is unknown what exactly caused the damage but it is likely due to the recent rains. The street fell into the sewage line. So far about 12 ft by 15 ft section of roadway has collapsed, and it is approximately 15 to 20 feet deep. The roadway is expected to be closed for an extended amount of time for repair. DF 3621
