Man Who Barricaded Himself Inside Downtown Sacramento Building Surrenders

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A man barricaded himself inside of a Downtown Sacramento building has surrendered after an hours-long standoff.

Police were called around 11 p.m. Tuesday night to an apartment complex near F and 9th Streets in the Alkalai Flat Neighborhood of Downtown Sacramento and by early Wednesday morning had the complex surrounded with SWAT officers.

Police negotiators were also called to scene. The man, reportedly wanted on a domestic violence charge, refused to talk.

Sgt. Bryce Heinlein with Sacramento Police says officers contacted a woman and several small children who exited the residence when the first got to the scene. The woman said the man, who lives with her, was exhibiting "bizarre behavior" and allegedly assaulted her. Police said they believe he is armed with a blunt object and may be under the influence of narcotics.

Police deployed several flashbang distraction devices that sound like loud explosions in the area and asked people to avoid the area. The surrounding area was evacuated for some time.

The man was taken into custody just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday. He has been identified as 36-year-old Juan Magana, a man who police say has a violent criminal history.

Police also revealed that K9 who helped take Magana into custody suffered a minor injury during the incident when he fought back.

The dog, K9 Officer Brig, has been taken to a veterinary hospital to be treated. Brig will be staying at the hospital for the next few days to heal.
