San Joaquin County Sheriff Under Investigation Over Gun Sales

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY (CBS13) — The San Joaquin County District Attorney is investigating the county's sheriff and deputies over the sale of evidence guns and old service weapons.

Sheriff Steve Moore and several deputies are accused of buying county guns at a fraction of their value, then reselling some for a profit. He denies the accusations and previously called for an investigation to show transparence.

But former deputy Frank Gayaldo says the sheriff's office committed embezzlement.

"It defrauded the county out of the full value of the weapons," he said. "There was a gun chop shop scheme happening. Guns were being stripped down to their frames and reassembled after they were purchased. The county lost thousands of dollars, taxpayers' money."
