City Considers Highway Security Cameras After Fatal Shootings

PITTSBURG, Calif. (AP) -- In the wake of several fatal shootings on a stretch of Highway 4, the Pittsburg City Council is considering installing security cameras on the freeway.

KNTV-TV reports that the council will vote Monday on whether to spend more than $100,000 on equipment to install the cameras on the highway.

In the past few months there have been a number of seemingly random shootings on the highway in town. Most recently 25-year-old Shaniqua Marie was killed. California Highway Patrol says there were at least 20 shootings on East Bay freeways since November.

Pittsburg Mayor Ben Johnson says the cameras would help authorities identify the shooters or shooter and generally discourage such activity.
