Young Mom's Custom Wheelchair Stolen

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (CBS13) -- A young mother's custom-built wheelchair has been stolen from in front of her own home. Now, she's pleading for help from the public to help identify whoever took it, hoping to get it back.

Taylor Acamo, 24, now sits in a donated hospital wheelchair one week after someone stole her $5,000 custom wheelchair from in front of her home.

"All the doors were unlocked and everything was gone," Taylor said.

Taylor is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and relies on her custom-built wheelchair to do everything, including taking care of her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Savvy.

"It makes me more self-sufficient. I can go grocery shopping with my daughter, I'm just a lot more independent," says Taylor.

Taylor was going to a doctor's appointment for a check-up after her 36th surgery when she noticed her expensive wheelchair was gone. It was her only way of getting around.

"It's just easier for me to pick up. This hospital wheelchair is heavy; I can't pick one up by myself."

Taylor says it could take another six months to build a new wheelchair like the one she had. She now has to rely even more on family.

Deputies are looking for a suspect with no shame.

A sergeant from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office tells CBS13 Taylor's police report has been forwarded to investigations for review.
