Acampo Man Convicted Of Trying To Join ISIS Sentenced

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The 22-year-old California man who pleaded guilty to trying to join Islamic extremists was sentenced to prison time on Tuesday.

Nicholas Teausant pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization back in 2015. He was arrested in March 2014 in Washington state while trying to get to Canada.

Teausant planned to then fly to Syria to join the Islamic State. He was captured after discussing his plans with a friend who was actually an FBI informant.

Tuesday, a federal judge sentenced Teausant to 12 years in prison. He will be on supervised release for 25 years after his prison time.

Lawyers for Teausant argued that he had a mental illness that made him vulnerable to the informant.
