GRAEAGLE (CBS13) — A mountain biker on the trails just outside of Reno felt like he’d been hit by a truck, but instead he had hit a bear.

He was riding with a group of friends in Graeagle when he darted out in front of the pack, only to get a smackdown he won’t soon forget.

It came out of nowhere during 26-year-old Davis Souza’s weekend adventure with his buddies. A young cub darted out and rang his bell.

“I’ve seen them off to the side, doing their bear thing but never one moving this fast,” he said.

The Tahoe City landscaper hit the ground hard, but the bear scampered off, seemingly unfazed by the impact.

“I didn’t have any time to react,” he said. “He just swooped my front tire out from underneath me and I got the wind knocked out of me pretty good and a few scrapes, but nothing else.”

Initially Souza thought he hit his trail dog, Moose, because he’s the same color as the bear.
