IKEA Recalls At Least 27 Million Chests And Drawers Over Tip-Over Hazard

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Home furnishings giant IKEA is recalling at least 27 million chests and dressers due to a tip-over hazard that caused several deaths.

Since 2014, three children have been killed after being crushed to death by the line of furniture.

The voluntary recall applies to chests and dressers taller than 23.5 inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29.5 inches that do not meet the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary industry standard, according to a statement from the company.

"The recalled MALM chests and dressers were manufactured and sold through June 2016 and include the 3-drawer, 4-drawer, 5-drawer and 6-drawer models. Other IKEA chests and dressers in this recall were sold at various times through June 2016," according to a statement from the company.

If not properly anchored to the wall, the furniture can tip over.

"We are announcing this recall… given the recent tragic death of a third child. It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers' homes, and we believe that taking further action is the right thing to do," the company said in a statement.

Ikea launched an ad campaign in 2015 that warned customers of the dangers of falling furniture. They also distributed 300,000 anchoring kits.

IKEA says those affected by the recall call received a free wall-anchoring repair kit, or a full or partial refund.
