Mandatory evacuations are in effect for parts of Placer and El Dorado Counties because of the Trailhead Fire.

Flames have burned about 350 acres and are threatening homes and other buildings. According to Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, a total of 2,444 structures are threatened by the fire.

Foresthill High School is open as a shelter for people who've left their homes.

Firefighters are confident they are making progress, but are also concerned about hot spots flaring up overnight.

"At this point the fire is essentially holding inside the retardant lines," said Capt. John Hotchkiss with Cal Fire. "We don't have any structures immediately threatened, but overnight we are worried about hot spots and we will be vigilant in watching it."

The cause of the fire, which first flared up on Tuesday, is under investigation.
