Central California Teen's Jail Death Under Investigation

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are investigating whether drugs played a role in the death of a 16-year-old girl with minor criminal history who died in a Central California juvenile jail, officials and a family spokesman said Tuesday.

An autopsy found no signs of foul play on the body of Bryana Terriquez, so authorities are performing forensic toxicology tests, which could take several weeks to return, officials said.

"Anytime you see a person who doesn't have any significant trauma you want to find out what's going on inside," said Tony Botti, spokesman for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. "It's probably going to tell us our answers."

Bryana was in custody Saturday at the county's Juvenile Justice Campus in Fresno, where she experienced what officials called a medical issue. Botti said he had no more details. Authorities rushed her by ambulance to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities from the Sheriff's Office have briefed relatives on what they know so far, but they still can't say ultimately what killed her, said Las Vegas-based attorney Stephen Stubbs, who represents the girl's family.

Bryana had been on probation for petty vandalism, and she broke curfew, a violation that landed her in jail, said Stubbs, adding that she had no drug history.

Authorities are also combing through the jail's surveillance video to see whether she interacted with others in the hours before being found lifeless, Stubbs said.

"It's all speculation right now," he said. "We just have to wait to see what happens."
