Workers, Businesses Poised For Golden 1 Center Payoff

SACRAMENTO (CBS) - You can hear, see, and feel the buzz about the Golden 1 Center. On the streets and in nearby businesses, the arena dominates conversation.

"There is people packed waiting outside and stuff," said "Barber" Joe.

He and his business partners moved Immaculate Cuts barber shop from Elk Grove to a new location only feet from the Kings new arena. The proximity was the sole purpose for the move.

"You're basically stepping out on faith," said Joe about the investment, "hopefully everything works out."

While business is picking up outside the arena, Kings' staff are working to fill positions inside.

"On day of events, we'll have north of 600 people," said Michael Tuohy, the General Manager of Legends Hospitality, a Kings partner for food and beverage service.

"We're budgeted to do close to 200 events a year. So that's exciting," Tuohy continued.

While no concrete numbers were given, a Kings representative says they have a lot of new positions to fill.

"The food and beverage program for Golden One is a lot more robust and comprehensive than it was previously at Sleep Train Arena," said Tuohy.

As for the former Sleep Train employees, many will continue in the same or similar role if they choose.

"We have a plethora of positions," said Tuohy, "a lot of availability."

Tuohy says with the arena moving downtown, their hope is to hire both skilled and entry-level workers.

"We want to be able to provide opportunities," said Tuohy, "so we're going to give everyone a fair shot."

Downtown employers now looking for employees a cut above the rest.

" We have the opportunity to be right here. Right across the street," said Joe.

The job fair is at Sleep Train Arena from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Click here for more information about jobs.
