Sacramento Sheriffs Make Arrest After Shooting That Hospitalized 6-Year-Old

SACRAMENTO (CBS 13) - A woman is behind bars five days after shooting a 6-year-old in South Sacramento.

Investigators with Sacramento County Sheriff's Department arrested 21-year-old Adreiona Taylor on Saturday.

"You never want to hear when any victim is shot, especially an innocent child or an innocent victim," said Sgt. Tony Turnbull, with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Detectives with the Major Crimes Bureau located Taylor in the home of a family member in Oroville.  Four days before the arrest, a 6-year-old girl was shot in the arm in the intersection of Fruitridge Road and Lawrence Drive. Turnbull said Taylor was in the passenger seat of a car when she fired the gun.

"Detectives have learned that the 6-year-old victim's mother, who was in the car that was shot up, and the suspect knew each other prior to," he said. "There was some disagreements and tensions leading up to the shooting and that's what we believe the motive behind it was."

Turnbull wouldn't release the details of the relationship between the women, but investigators are looking for more information about the driver of the car.

"We at least know there was at least another driver in the car and we're still in the process of trying to identify who that driver was," Sgt. Turnbull said.

The 6-year-old caught in the crossfire suffered a gunshot to the arm. She was taken to a nearby hospital and had two surgeries on her arm this week.

"I don't know the prognosis of the arm at this point in time, but she seems to be OK right now," Sgt. Turnbull said. "You know people don't take that stuff into consideration when they start firing a weapon. If you're having issues with somebody, it's not the way to handle it. At the very least, just walk away."

"It's a horrible thing to hear because, of course, I'm a mother, but I didn't know it was this close," said Donna Adams, who lives just a few blocks away from the intersection where the shooting took place.

Adams and her children play in Lawrence Park all the time.  She has high hopes for her neighborhood, but never forgets to keep a cautious eye.

"Unfortunately you do notice when the sun goes down, we all kind of buckle up and go home," Adams said.  "Kids should never be involved in anything like that. Ever."
