Robbery Suspect Shot And Killed By Stockton Police

STOCKTON (CBS13) — A robbery suspect was shot and killed by police during a pursuit on Tuesday.

The shooting happened in the area of Jamestown and Souza streets.

An officer was following up on a robbery investigation and found a man matching the description at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police say the suspect was fleeing the scene with a handgun. During the chase, the suspect reportedly dropped his gun. The suspect then turned to face the officer.

The officer told the suspect to not pick up the gun. However, the officer says the suspect went and picked up the gun - prompting the officer to fire his weapon in fear of his safety.

The suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Colby Friday, a known gang member. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, police say.

Police say the suspect's .45 caliber handgun had a round loaded in the chamber.

Officer David Wells, a veteran of the Stockton Police Department since 2003, has been placed on paid administrative leave, per usual policy after an officer-involved shooting. He was not injured in the incident.
