Santa Clara County Inmates On Hunger Strike Demand Changes
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — More than 300 Santa Clara County inmates are on a hunger strike demanding sweeping changes to how the jail is operated.
KPIX-TV reports (http://cbsloc.al/2e7PHaI ) that Thursday marked the fourth day of the planned two-week hunger strike, which is calling for the end of solitary confinement, more sets of clothing and changes to the commissary system.
Community organizer Jose Valle of Silicon Valley De-Bug says the inmates participating, 204 of whom are in solitary confinement, believe the strike is the only way to incite real change.
Valle says they are calling for Sheriff Laurie Smith to meet with them, their families and supporters to address their concerns.
The strike is set to end Oct. 31 but Valle says if the inmates' demands aren't met it may be extended.
