Deputies Buy Teen A Bed After Learning He Sleeps On The Floor

HAYWARD (CBS13) - Deputies in the East Bay went above and beyond the call of duty to help a single mom and her teen boy struggling to get by.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office says they met 17-year-old Anthony Aguirre during a traffic stop recently. The deputies got to know Anthony, but soon learned a heartbreaking fact about the teen's life: that he didn't have a bed and had to sleep on the floor of his home.

"You see, when your growing up with a single mom trying to make ends meet, buying a bed is not the easiest thing to do," the sheriff's office wrote on their Facebook page.

Anthony had "nothing but contempt" for authorities, deputies say. So, they came up with a plan to help the teen and hopefully change his heart.

Deputies J. Peterson and M. Magdael collected money from their colleagues and bought a bed.

On Wednesday, the deputies showed up at Anthony's home with the bed - much to the teen's surprise.

"We know that for young people to grow up healthy and be ready to learn, they need a good nights sleep. Sounds simple but it is not always a reality for some," the sheriff's office wrote.

The deputies say Anthony no longer dislikes them and now has a new respect for cops.
