DIXON (CBS13) — Dixon High School students are coming to the aid of a student in need, with a little help from their home economics skills.

Ivan Contreras, 16, was paralyzed after a backyard accident, and he now uses a wheelchair.

While most teens spend their free time at the mall or hanging out with friends, these students baked for a teenager their didn't even know.

"I don't know who he is and that doesn't matter to me. I want to help him," said Lexy Urbie.

She's the creative culinarian behind the fundraising effort to get Contreras's family a van that can accommodate his motorized wheelchair.

The teen was paralyzed in a backyard accident.

"I was jumping on a backyard trampoline," Contreras said. "I was doing a flip and then I was laying on my back and I couldn't feel from my chest down."

He suffered an incomplete C4 spinal cord injury and is now paralyzed. News of his injury spread quickly around campus, as did the medical bills and heavy lifting for his mother Angelica.

"For me, it's really hard," she said. "I usually have to have two people to help me to put him in the car."

Teacher Eleanor Pracht-Smith basked in the warmth of the students' good deeds.

"They're just some incredible teenagers who want to make the world a better place and what better way to make your own world a better place than starting with your own community," she said.

With an army of 50 student chefs baking positivity into each bite, Contreras' mission is to channel their hard work into his recovery and learning how to walk again.

"I have it in my head that I'm going to walk again. I'm just going to be normal and I'm going to be me again," he said.

He plans to go to college and become an orthopedic surgeon.

The baked goods will be available at Dixon's annual Christmas tree lighting from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Donations can also be made at First Northern Bank, c/o Ivan Contreras Rehab Fund, 195 North First Street in Dixon, routing number 121105156 and account number 01410222.
