RIPON (CBS13) — A fourth child has been diagnosed with cancer at a San Joaquin County elementary school, and parents believe it’s because of radiation caused by a cell phone tower.

The towers are spread throughout the community, but it’s this particular one that parents say needs to go.

“We had a doctor tell us that it’s 100 percent environmental, the kind of tumor that he has,” said Monica Ferrulli.

Her son Mason was the second child to be diagnosed with cancer in just three years at Weston Elementary. He was 10-years-old and walked by this cell phone tower daily.

“It’s indescribable, it’s really tough,” she said.

“It’s one of the hardest things that I’ve been through,” said Joe Prime.

Prime’s son Kyle was the first, diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2016. And two more kids were diagnosed this year.

“It just seems like coincidence is no longer a reason for all this illness,” Prime said.

They believe it’s this cell phone tower that’s harming their kids.

“Kids shouldn’t be guinea pigs and we shouldn’t be taking chances with the children’s lives,” Prime said.

The district has had several tests done saying the tower is safe and meets federal regulations. But some families weren’t convinced and hired an expert.

“I wouldn’t send my kids there at all, it absolutely is dangerous,” said Eric Windheim, an electromagnetic radiation specialist. “Children are still developing and their cells are still being divided. It’s the worst possible time in their life to be exposed.”

He says it’s not just a cell tower, it also transmits wireless frequencies.

“Instead of only going 300 yards like regular Wi-Fi, Y-Max can go 30 miles,” he said.

Parents want the mast removed, but the district won’t budge. Parents say the district gets a kickback of $2,000 a month to have the tower for a telephone company, but the district so far has not commented.

“It’s a real disappointment that it’s taking moms of sick children and dads of sick children to come out and say something needs to be done,” Prime said.

Ferrulli’s son Mason has also since relapsed and is undergoing brain cancer treatments while a fourth child from has recently been diagnosed and taken out of school.

They say it’s not just a battle now for their children, but a fight these parents say they won’t give up.

“There’s a lot of kids that we love that still go to the school, so we are fighting for them,” Ferrulli said.

The district sent out a letter to parents saying that the electric magnetic frequencies are far below federal standards and have completed a thorough investigation and do not have any plans of removing the cell phone tower on campus.

  1. These parents must understand that a school board is political. Many members are using it as a stepping stone to higher office… and therefore don’t particularly care about the children. This situation is beyond coincidence. The “Federal Guidlines” may be wrong or inadequate. Do you want to bet your child’s life on them? The parents must make this a political effort to unseat the board members. That’s the only clout they have.

  2. Cian Lang says:

Seems like the writer of this article would love her readers to believe this theory about the cell phone tower causing cancer, despite the fact that it is virtually certain not to be true. There are lots of elementary schools. Although the likelihood of four children developing cancer at one particular school is very low, the likelihood of four children developing cancer at any of the thousands of elementary schools in the country is not low at all. Parents are understandably looking to make sense of things, but the fact they think it is caused by the cell tower does not make it so. This is exactly the same thought process that caused autism to get blamed on vaccines.

    1. Philip Popenik says:

you need to do some research…cell tower’s cause cancer…..one woman sued for the tower’s over her apartment that caused her cancer…..its happening everywhere…she won..you need to wake up to reality..5G is much worse..

      1. John Dendy says:

What a moron. Cell towers are everywhere. We should all have cancer if this is true

      2. Jason Ledd says:

5G will give many people cancer, just say no to cellphones. Even current towers give you cancer, it just depends on proximity to towers. Autism is caused by mercury and aluminum.

      3. Which woman? Where’s the judgement? What’s her name? Which court? All of these details are missing from your comment because Facebook isn’t a news source. If you spent more time reading actual news instead of spreading rumors you might find yourself on the right side of an issue occasionally.

      4. Cell phone towers do not cause cancer. The article intentionally confuses people by observing that signals go a long distance, 30 miles; the point of the comment is to suggest that the power levels are greater and that the power levels create the danger, but the suggestion is incorrect. No matter the power level, if radiation is not at a sufficiently short wavelength, it can’t interact with the bonds in organic matter. The reason that radio is able to pass through walls is that the radiation has too long a wavelength to interact with the matter, and the fact that the signals pass through walls and bodies should tell you that the signals are not interacting with the bodies or other organic matter. Dangerous radiation has to have a short wavelength, shorter than UV-A; short wavelengths like those of UV-B and x-rays are ionizing, which is the effect that can cause cancer. Long wavelengths like microwave, millimeter wave, infrared, and radio cannot do anything more than chance the spin state of a molecule, which we experience as warmth, and no one with any common sense thinks that warming raises your cancer risk. If you are afraid of light with long wavelengths, then you should be terrified of visible light, which is far shorter in wavelength and more reactive—why do you think that we are able to see?—and you should hide yourself away in a dark room.

    2. Donald Walker says:

You are making far too much sense for a public comment board.
If only more journalists, parents (and marginal “doctors”) took a statistics class.

    3. bernie1815 says:

Well said. The article is confusing and non specific. Which cancers? How old were the students? How long had they attended the school? How close did they come to this particular cell tower? What is their family history with respect to cancers?

  3. Edward Warren says:

The electromagnetic radiation specialist says: “Children are still developing and their cells are still being divided. It’s the worst possible time in their life to be exposed.”

    Where did the electromagnetic radiation specialist go to school? Human cells divide throughout life. The cells in your body will divide 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 times during your life.

He also probably believes that life doesn’t begin at conception. It does.

  4. Bob Jackson says:

    Its radiation. Period.

    1. Donald Walker says:

You mean, like we get from the sun and outer space every second of our lives and multiple times that every time we get on a plane?

      1. Yes Donald…very similar to that radiation. If you stand directly in sun uncovered for long periods of time you get burned. Eventually you may get cancer (you certainly increase the risk.) If you think big companies and big government is looking out for you then you are naive. I don’t know if cell towers cause cancer or not. But I don’t want to find out by placing a tower on top of my house, and I also don’t assume your or my interest is first in the thoughts of decision makers.

  5. Stephen Rose says:

Public endangerment of it’s youngest citizens, the board members need to be held accountable with gigantic lawsuits at minimum.

This is what 5G is going to do everywhere, at incredible rates.

  6. Jim S. says:

I know these people have it tough, but reacting by being as stupid as humanly possible isn’t going to fix anything.

  7. Dave Halpern says:

Move the school district administrator offices right next to the cell tower.

  8. Dixie-Cleon Anderson says:

EMC/EMI cannot cause cancer. It is not nuclear radiation. This is article’s theory is about as foolish as the climate science they quote for global warming. Just scare tactics trying to make an opporutnity for a scam. BTW statistics and computer programs are not science.

  9. Phil Ridge says:

“The district sent out a letter to parents saying that the electric magnetic frequencies are far below federal standards and have completed a thorough investigation and do not have any plans of removing the cell phone tower on campus.” – That’s all well and good, but nothing in this statement says the tower is not the cause of the illnesses. The federal standard most likely find some level of risk to be either unknown or acceptable. It needs further review from outside experts who have no skin in the game. The school district is putting itself in a bad position by giving the appearance that their resistance is being driven by financial incentives.

  10. John Merrill says:

Blame the Cell tower and you don’t have to look for other contaminants like chemical exposure, I guess. But there is a long laundry list of things which could cause the school to be a Cancer Hotspot. Most of which we have historically been found to be things like Pesticides, Cleaning agents etc. Myopia is not your friend here. The RF Levels found in the NIH study were much higher than would come from a Cell Tower at the normal perimeter distance. Would need to have a cell phone in your pocket/held against you to get the levels of interest.

  11. Jennifer Anzalone says:

I can tell you exactly how this works: You have an elite reptilian crew called blue bloods and THEY are responsible for spraying you with chemtrails through private corporations like Boeing. Chemtrails are a bio-weapon and ALL doctors know about morgellon’s and chemtrails in the central nervous system. It attacks the endocrine system. You have a weaponized sun simulator that is another factor. It caused all the fires in California. Anyhow, Frequency will destroy cells. Period. Do you remember the story about the cuban diplomats and their sonic booms attacks? Well, guess what.. same deal. You get cancer by two things now: Chemtrails and frequency from WIFI signals from DARPA or Black ops. Also , another big factor is HIPPA violation. Where masons break into your DNA HIPPA chart and steal information about you. Once DARPA has your DNA signature they will track and trace you forever or until humanity wakes up and DEMANDS the annexation of WIFI towers!! TESLA TECHNOLOGY IS EVIL. YOUR DNA IS MADE UP OF LIGHT, COLOR AND SOUND AND THEY HAVE VIOLATED THAT!!! YOU are a specimen for the reptilian elite. THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU EXCEPT GAINING PSYCHIC POWERS AND MIND CONTROL. MK ULTRA. The kid is sick from ELF POISIONING. HE PROBABLY JUST NEEDS A GOOD BALANCED MEAL. He needs to be mentally focused on who he is. YOU can fight cancer by KNOWING THE TRUTH. CHEMTRAILS GO TO CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM; FREUQNCY FROM BLACK OPS TRACKS YOU AND ZAPS YOU UNTIL YOU ARE SICK. JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE REPTILIANS.

  12. Scott Greenstone says:

Anti-science wins the day. This has been far from proved and the parents have no proof other than a coincidence to support their claims.

And they rely on people claiming expertise who say things like this:

“’I wouldn’t send my kids there at all, it absolutely is dangerous’ said Eric Windheim, an electromagnetic radiation specialist. ‘Children are still developing and their cells are still being divided.'”

This is a meaningless, and unsupportive, comment. The cells in people on death’s door are also still dividing.

This person may be an expert in electromagnetic radiation, but knows nothing about the biological impact of electromagnetic radiation. This happens very frequently, people experts in one subject, think that expertise extends to all others. A PhD in electrical engineering likely knows nearly nothing about molecular biology.

  13. Renita Pedro says:

Cell towers and radiation are a known fact. The commentators here that allege “this has not been proved” are deliberately misconstruing the known facts, the hundreds of studies and the expert opinions that have weighed in on this topic. Most likely, these are industry shills who are desperately trying to change the narrative and defuse the alarm. They’re pretending that these other studies do not exist (do a google search – anyone can find them). The new 5G networks they’re trying to promote will make this issue even worse. Cell towers should not be around any children, period. That is a statement of fact by known experts (look it up).

  14. Animals have a very minor, almost insignificant reaction to RF. If I were to put you inside the generation section of Hoover Dam, while at peak production, and administer an IQ test; your score would be about the same as in a class room.

We have had cell phones for almost 20 years – and the frequency of brain cancer is about what it’s always been.

But, if I were to give you a few cc’s of LSD, adrenaline, caffeine or a host of other chemicals; your body will react far more, than being around RF. We are far more sensitive to chemicals, than we are to RF, especially since we are essentially ~95% water.

    1. Tim Allen says:

I’ve worked inside dams right next to the turbines for years. You are making a false equivalency. RF produced by generators isn’t the same as the RF emissions from cell towers, not even in the same frequency range or intensity (you’re off by an order of magnitude). And no, brain cancers have definitely gone way up from cell phone usage. There are plenty of published studies attesting to these facts. You’re also making numerous false equivalency claims with non-applicable commentary about LSD, caffeine, etc., that has nothing whatsoever to do with the story or cell towers.

      1. The point is, that we are far more affected by chemicals, than we are electromagnetic radiation. You are more likely to get sick from a chemical, or mold, or other physical thing – than you are from your cell phone, modem, power transmission cables, or a cell tower.

  15. Ripon is surrounded by Almond Orchards, in the heart of agriculture USA. The amount of pesticides dropped from the air and leeching into the water system should be more of a concern than a cell tower. Though, I do believe there has to be a better spot for a tower other than a school site.

  16. Edmond Day says:

Leukemia will be as common as the common cold – SOON!

  17. “Parents say the district gets a kickback of $2,000 a month to have the tower for a telephone company…” All I can say is that if these parents file a lawsuit and win, that $2000/month will be a drop in the bucket and could likely bankrupt the school system. It’s best if they rethink the risks on both sides.

  18. So these parents and their children run around all day, every day with their smart phones and wi-fi and they are worried about one cell tower. Do they not realize that there are cell towers everywhere that are communicating with their smart phones they hold in their hands? This is what happens when people are ignorant of RF exposure and technology.

  19. Tim Allen says:

Most of the commentator here are grossly uninformed and some obviously work for the cell phone industry. There are hundreds of published studies now available about the dangers of cell phone towers, cell phones, and radiation impacts on humans and wildlife. Their blanket “apologies” for the cell phone industry and the effects of radiation upon human health is meant to distract everyone from doing a little research and finding out the truth of the matter. These parents definitely have a right to be concerned. The communications industry has done what the tobacco industry did – published erroneous data, false claims of harmlessness and given out donations, funding, support and so on to politicians and districts to put up their towers. Any industry that represents a potential harm to the public does this. Do not accept the false claims, straw arguments and ridiculous conjecture being posted here until you’ve actually READ the studies. I have – and cell phone radiation in all its forms, including the towers, is DANGEROUS, period. Young children continue to form their brains and internal organs that are inherently more affected by radiation than older people. Get online, ignore these idiots here and look this information up. The dramatic rise in cancers, including brain cancers and the corresponding use in cell phones, cell towers and EMF saturation over large segments of the population are definitely related.
