6 Dead Puppies Found In Trashcan Left In South Sacramento Neighborhood

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Authorities are asking for help in finding whoever dropped off a trashcan with six dead puppies inside in a south Sacramento neighborhood.

"We have since then been trying to backtrack and figure out what may have happened," Jace Huggins, Chief Animal Officer, said. "We run out of our ability to do follow-ups so now we're asking a community to help us."

The discovery was made on Aug. 4 along the 2400 block of Wacker Way.

A total of six dogs – all between the ages of four-five months – were found in the trashcan, Front Street Animal Shelter officials say. It's unclear how the dogs died, but officials say they all appear to have passed around the same time.

"For me personally it's along the lines of six puppies don't normally die all at once," Huggins said. "So we guess that they probably got sick and we don't have all that story."

Video from a Ring surveillance camera shows that the trashcan was dropped off in the neighborhood between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Aug. 1.

Neighbors in the area are concerned.

"It's sad. It's tragic. It's heartbreaking. They're puppies," Rolanda Clemons-Hassons said.

"I'm just concerned it would be so cruel to do that to some animals," Paola Godoy said.

The trashcan is an older one used by the County of Sacramento. It has faded lettering of "LE" painted on its side.

Whether the puppies were sick or just abandoned, pet owners we talked to say, it didn't have to come to this.

"I have dog shelters. There's plenty of places where they can take it," Clemons-Hassons said. "We have people that do rescue."

"They should call. There's so many people out there that are willing to adopt," Godoy said.

"If they didn't want them, they could've called SPCA. They left an anonymous, they could've dropped them off," Enquire Chavez said.

Huggins told CBS13 some owners may not have the financial means to take care of their pets. But, he said there are right ways to make a tough situation easier.

"There are resources sure we want to make sure that provide resources to people so that they know," Huggins said.

Front Street officials say their investigation has stalled and they're now asking for help in trying to identify whoever owned the dogs.
