SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — If you have any gas-powered gardening tools, you may be forced to give them up soon.

California is considering a statewide ban on the equipment.

At least 60 cities in California have some kind of ban on gas-powered garden tools, but now state regulators are concerned about the impacts these tools could be having on the environment.

According to the California Air Resources Board, running a gas-powered lawnmower for an hour will produce the same amount of air pollution as a Toyota Camry driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

There are millions more small off-road engines (i.e.: gas-powered lawnmowers and leaf blowers) in California than there are light-duty passenger cars, according to the board’s estimates.

The board has set a goal of reducing smog from these machines by 80 percent by 2031.

The mooks in Sacramento truly have their collective heads up their you know whats. Pathetic governance any way you slice it. What about the issues the people care about? Fugehdaboudit.

  2. LC Benderson says:

This is why sane people are moving out of California. Eventually all that will remain are the lunatic socialists, homeless people, MS13, and millions of immigrants who actually hate America.

Can my illegal gardener still use them?

    1. t port says:

Good question. I guess they will have to use battery packs, but more likely they will tow a gas or diesel generator behind their gas powered pick up trucks. More virtue signaling.

Does Tesla make a lawn mower now?

  5. Bob Stevenson says:

This ban can’t happen soon enough as far as I’m concerned. The ban will also significantly reduce, if not eliminate in many cases, the often way too loud noise people are subjected to from leaf blowers and lawnmowers that people keep using.

  6. Kurt Koenig says:

Just another classic example of Kalifornia stupid

  7. Odell D Smith says:

Stupid is as stupid does. The people of California have completely lost thier minds.

Hear that sucking sound? that’s more people packing and leaving the state of so called paradise

And are homeowners who use lawncare services suppose to keep their garage doors open during the day so they can have somewhere to plug in the electric tools and mowers?! Guess who pays for the new non-gas tools that have to be bought. Not using electricity – well then the next step is to figure out what to do with all those used up powerpaks/batteries that get dumped into the garbage – can’t throw them in the garbage- well then you’ll be finding them all along the roads because they’re not going to pay to bring them to a recycling place!!! Keep it up Calif. you just keep getting dumber and dumber and making people more aware of why to move out. Just like the idiots who blocked off the curbsides on J street so the cleaning vehicles can’t get along anymore. Not a single thinking brain among them. Thousands of acres of land is burned every year polluting the air and they’re worried about gas powered tools.

  11. Tim Monroe says:

Oh my! What will the thousands of immigrant lawn and garden workers do now? They all use power mowers and leaf blowers and trimmers. Maybe a new industry of making electric equipment will surface. I have an electric snowblower if anybody’s interested.

What about the mowing of golf courses (not a golfer), school playing fields, professional playing fields, public parks, etc.? With all the fires in California I would think they’d want to keep firebreaks around homes, etc.Are these people totally insane out there? I thought Vermont had cornered the market on ludicrous legislative bills.

  13. That’s the bad news. The good news is that a heck of a lot of illegal’s will either lose their jobs or have to shell out for the more expensive (think batteries) electrical equivalents. Or, better still, go back to Mexico. Or wherever.
Unless they turn to crime, a common event with illegals.

Lunacy is it’s own excuse. For Kalifornia Progressives, it’s _all_ about optics.

  15. Joe Blow says:

I think this is absolutely WONDERFUL and should have been done a LONG time again. The sooner all gas powered lawn and garden equipment is banned, the better! LET’S SEE SOME FAST ACTION!

  16. no says:

I guess all the folks in the foothills who are losing their fire insurance and required to maintain a defensible fire space will need to trade in their weed eaters for scythes and their chain saws for hand saws. What‘s next, edging lawns with scissors? I just love it when Gov imposes a lot of requirements and then jerks away the means to comply. We’re third generation Californians who just pulled up stakes after 30 years in El Dorado County to escape this lunacy. Moved back East where gas is $2.10/gallon right now and you can smell FREEDOM in the air.
