Davis High School Senior Accidentally Shot By Brother, Police Say

DAVIS (CBS13) — Authorities said a teenager has died after he was accidentally shot by his older brother in their Davis home on Thursday.

The Davis Police Department said they responded to reports of a shooting victim at around 3:30 p.m. along 8th Street near Mesquite Drive. When police arrived they say there was no indication it was intentional.

The victim, identified by the Yolo County Coroner as Davis resident Jerred Vargas, 19, was located shot in his apartment. Police confirmed to CBS13 Friday morning that Vargas died from his injuries.

"The first thing we want to rule out was it wasn't accidental. Then we will look at technically how it happened. The investigation should flesh that out. There are many ways gun accidents can occur," said Asst. Chief Paul Doroshov.

Detectives are not releasing the brother's name due to the sensitive nature of the incident.

"Not only do you have a victim that lost his life, but you have a family traumatized by the whole event," said Doroshov.

Students at Davis Senior High School are mourning the loss of one of their classmates just a few months before graduation.

"Jarred was a nice guy saying hi to everyone, outgoing walking around joyful," said Raza Shazil.

At Davis Senior High School, counselors from across the district were brought in to console classmates on Friday.

"I will miss his smile. I never saw him without a smile -always smiling in the hallway," said Shazil.

The District Attorneys office will review the police's findings and decide if charges will be filed.
