Teenager's Cold Case Death Solved In Northern California
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say they have solved a cold case in Northern California and arrested a man accused of killing a teenager in 2016.
The body of 18-year-old Kirk Kimberly was found in November 2016, two weeks after he was reported missing, buried in a shallow grave on edge of the Sonoma State University campus in Rohnert Park. He had been stabbed multiple times.
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said Monday officials have charged 20-year-old Daniel Carrillo with homicide.
The sheriff's office said Carrillo was moved Feb. 28 from a youth prison — which can house offenders up to age 25 — in Stockton to Sonoma County's jail for a separate case.
Sonoma County detectives arrested Carrillo on a no-bail warrant for homicide that day.
It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
Kimberly was last seen on Oct. 17, 2016, as he rode his bicycle from home to meet a friend, KTVU reported. His cellphone was off when his parents tried to reach him.
The teenager's body was found in a known rural party place between the college campus and Rancho Cotate High School, where Kimberly had graduated.
A memorial to Kimberly has been repeatedly vandalized, the TV station reported.
Rohnert Park is about 95 miles (150 kilometers) west of Sacramento and 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of San Francisco.
