California Prisoner Dies Of Apparent Virus Complications

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — An inmate has died from apparent complications of COVID-19 at a California prison that was hard-hit by the virus.

The inmate died Monday at a hospital outside of the California Institution for Men in Chino, according to a statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. It didn't provide any other information about the prisoner.

The prison east of Los Angeles has more than 100 inmates who are actively infected with the coronavirus, authorities said.

In an effort to reduce the spread of the infection, corrections officials on May 30 transferred 121 inmates from the Chino facility to San Quentin State Prison without properly testing them.

Since then, about 1,400 of the 3,500 inmates at the facility near San Francisco have tested positive and several death row inmates have died. Two were believed to have succumbed to COVID-19 complications and one tested positive for the virus after his death. Authorities haven't determined whether a fourth death row inmate, who died last week, had the virus.

There have now been nearly 30 deaths from COVID-19 in California's prison system, according to state figures. More than 2,300 inmates are listed as actively having the infection.
