1 Person Injured In South Natomas Shooting

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Officers are investigating after one person was shot in the south Natomas area Friday afternoon, the Sacramento Police Department said.

The shooting happened at around 2:40 p.m. in the area of Northview Drive and Northfield Drive near Garden Highway.

Police said the victim, only described as an adult man, was shot at least one time. He has been taken to the hospital and was in stable condition, police said.

The neighborhood was blocked off as a heavy police presence -- including Sacramento police, police K-9s, a CHP chopper and SWAT teams -- descended on the area. There was no information available on a suspect or the circumstances of the shooting.

One mother was not able to get into the neighborhood as her children were inside of their apartment.

"I want to get my kids what if they start shooting bullets don't have names," says Breannah Conway, who was separated from her three children for hours.

"I told them to lock the doors go upstairs stay low I'll turn my alarm on," Conway added.

She stayed on facetime throughout the day trying to keep her kids calm.

"I just want to make sure you guys are okay in there," Conway told her kids.

After hours of a street flooded with guns, squad cars, and sirens cleared, the suspect was nowhere to be found.

The incident was not surprising but disappointing for neighbors.

"This is a common occurrence, unfortunately," says Juan Alvarez, who watched as law enforcement worked. A reminder of why he's decided to leave a city he's lived in for 20 years.

"We decided to move to Plumas lake… we have two kids, 11 and 8 years old, and we don't want them around such a violent community. My family will be a little safer," says Alvarez.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be ok. The suspect is currently not in custody and remains on the loose. There will be a small police presence here in Natomas throughout the night.
