SACRAMENTO - A driver is under arrest after a hit-and-run crash in Sacramento County left one pedestrian dead and two others injured.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. along Stockton Boulevard near McMahon Drive. According to authorities, a white Toyota Rav4 SUV was reportedly driving down Stockton Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it hit a sedan that was making a left turn to McMahon Drive. The crash caused the sedan to hit three pedestrians who were on the sidewalk. One pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and the two others were hospitalized with injuries described as moderate to major.

The SUV left at the scene of the crash by its driver, who allegedly fled.

The driver of the sedan suffered moderate injuries.

The family of the victim was notified while on scene. A witness, Sheila Mack, said she spoke with a man who said he was the victim's Grandfather shortly before he found out his grandson had been killed. She told us the grandfather said they were set to meet and when he arrived and saw the caution tape, he worried his grandson was the victim.

"I was talking to him earlier, he kept trying to look under... [where] the [body] was," Mack said.

More family members arrived at the scene before the caution tape was removed and stood in the spot where their loved one was hit.

Mack said she, too, was worried about who else was injured as she has an unhoused friend who lives just feet away from the crash. She's still waiting to find him and is worried he may be at the hospital, injured.

"Yeah, because that's where he sleeps. It's really bothering me. He asked me to come check on him, he never does that," she said.

One neighbor that lived in the area where the crash happened told CBS13 he worries about the intersection, himself. He explained that when the light turns green he counts to 10 to avoid a car that may choose to run a red light. He said the intersection is known for drivers who speed and has worried about an accident like this before.

The 29-year-old driver then reportedly got out of the SUV and ran away. He was arrested just before 6 p.m. and was booked into the Sacramento Main Jail. His identity has not been released.

Officers are searching for the suspect who was not injured in the crash. A Sacramento Police helicopter was utilized for a portion of the search and was seen over the area near the crash this afternoon.

The roadway reopened to traffic during the 7 p.m. hour.
