Kristen Breaux of Rocklin is the owner/operator of Traveling Trends, an up-and-coming fashion boutique on wheels. At events, the space in and around her custom turquoise-blue truck becomes a specialty shop with apparel, jewelry, décor and accessories. The prices are low and clothing comes in sizes from small to 3X. The Lincoln native’s background includes a wealth of experiences, from fashion and graphic design to website development and becoming a cordon bleu chef. Breaux and husband Justin, owner of My Auto Surgeon in Rocklin, have two young daughters. Traveling Trends just opened in March of 2016 and is already open for business at different SactoMoFo events around three times a week. More events and an online shop are in process; details and an event calendar can be found on the boutique’s website.

The Look

Comfy with a splash of femininity is the style forecast for Sacramento this summer, full of mixed textiles, boho chic and flowing silhouettes. Cold shoulder, draped ruffle and blouson looks are on trend according to Breaux, and graphic tees continue to be popular. Locals will be staying cool in maxi dresses, sheer tops over lace bralettes and tribal-print shorts with tie-cords and pompoms. “A lot of people are into texture right now,” Breaux notes, so keep an eye out for embossed and eyelet fabrics, micro pleats, crocheted rick rack, fringe and ruffles.

Summer Jewelry

“Long necklaces with large, single pendants are really in right now,” says Breaux, “as are choker-length chains with small charms.” Organic materials such as wood, leather, feathers and stone are being used, making “jewelry that brings you closer to nature.” Floral touches, such as very popular resin rose earrings, help bring it all together. Breaux notes that layering multiple, chunky bracelets is very much in style, especially with large pieces that have contrasting shapes, textures and colors.

Shoes And Accessories

The best summer shoes this year in the capital city are a combination of comfort and style. Flats are always popular, and the current trend is on shoes with feminine straps and laces. Ankle boot sandals, which lace gladiator-style up the leg, are also big this season. Breaux says the bottom line for shoes is “the more straps the better.” Trucker hats from Mother Trucker, emblazoned with slogans including Boss Lady, #FITMOM, girl mama and boy mama, are very hot. One of Breaux’s other favorite accessories are pretty, gossamer scarves. Unlike the heavy winter versions, these are feather light and offer “casual style with a flirty flair.”

The Palette

“Blush is the new black this season,” says Breaux happily, noting that wearing lighter hues can help keep things cooler in the Sacramento summer heat. Stripes, asymmetrical and traditional, are always a favorite, and boho-style tribal prints and polka dots keep things fun and fresh. “We love our American pride,” Breaux observes, so the patriotic combination of red, white and blue can be found on many pieces.

Details Matter

The hottest styles this summer will include clever detailing that can take even the most basic pieces from simple to sassy. Some touches are subtle, such as a line of decorative buttons, a color wash of stars on a pocket or the use of two different tonal fabrics. Others kick it up a notch with beading, sequins, feathers, patchwork, fringe, laces and bold graphics. Breaux says local fashionistas are snapping up anything embellished with bows.
