Best Free Winter Activities For Families In Sacramento

People do not have to have money to spend fun times with the family, including the family pet. While we may live in Northern California, and it may not be as warm as Southern Cal, it is still warm enough to enjoy outdoor events in the winter. Below you will find a variety of upcoming events to choose from, items such as fireworks on New Year's Eve, a pet costume contest at the Pet Expo, free admission to Fairytale Town, a park to play numerous sports in and Christmas in the Village.

Are you looking for a new pet? Do you enjoy taking your pet on excursions? If you answered yes to either question, then this event is for you. There will be exhibitors, prize give-aways, obedience demonstrations, free nail trims, agility demonstrations, discounted vaccinations, micro-chipping and heartworm and flea preventatives. Fairytale Town has two Free Admission Days approaching. The first is November 28 for its annual Canned Food Drive for the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services Spirit of Giving Holiday Drive. Those who bring canned goods will be admitted into Fairytale Town. The day includes free arts and crafts. The second Free Admission Day is the day before Christmas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This gives you and the family a chance to take a break from your holiday preparations and enjoy some down time. Those in the park before 2 p.m. will be able to stay until 3 p.m.

A wonderful way to spend a fall afternoon is in the park. William Land Park has numerous areas to entertain you. There are three baseball fields, two softball fields, three soccer fields, two lakes and a golf course for you to enjoy. You can also find a place for basketball, and a wading pool. There is a 1.89-mile-long jogging trail and a rock garden to enjoy. Throughout the park are tables for you to sit and watch others, or eat your picnic fixings. The park surrounds three favorite places for children: The Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town and Funderland.

Saturday, December 6, from 12 to 6 p.m., will be the Christmas in the Village the event. Rain or shine, there will be Stories with Santa, a children's craft area, craft vendors and merchant shopping. The Christmas Parade begins at 4 p.m. and the Christmas Tree Lighting in Town Square is at 5:30 p.m. There will be holiday music and Christmas carolers. The Fair Oaks Youth Advisory Board will collect canned food and non-perishables for its Share the Spirit event.

December 31, on New Year's Eve, there will be a fireworks extravaganza display over the Sacramento River and Tower Bridge at 9 p.m. and midnight. The Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau will present it. The event plans were still being made at the time of this writing. However, spokesperson Sidney Scheideman recommended the best place to watch the fireworks would be from the River Walk in Old Sac. An annual event, last year there was live music, children's programming, a variety of street entertainment and dinner specials.
