Tours include The History of the Sacramento Music Scene, which features stops at the area's first FM radio station and places connecting us to the Beach Boys, Gloria Gaynor and Blondie. Of course, you'll also follow the footsteps of homegrown celebrities Tesla and end the night with a concert in Cesar Chavez Plaza on Friday nights. Other tours include a tour centered around early Sacramento history, one showcasing local architectural styles and one on Sacramento's public art collection. Special tours for children are also offered. Reservations are not required and tours generally last about an hour.

Okay, so it's not technically walking, it's more like scooting, but the folks at Hysterical Walks and Rides have added a guided tour on Segways. That's right, the fun little two-wheeled contraptions are now used to see Sacramento in a whole new light. Lasting about two hours, the tours are presented in the infamous "Hysterical Style," combining stand-up antics with historical facts and making history come alive in a way you never thought possible. Segway tours leave from the Clarion Hotel and begin with a guided course in Segway usage. All riders must be over the age of 14, and reservations are required. Of course, Hysterical Walks and Rides still offer their traditional walking tours as well, including Old Sacramento and the Walk of the Dead - complete with ghost stories. Prices vary depending on tour and age and can be booked through the Hysterical Walks and Rides website.

Old Sacramento Living History

Since 1995, the Old Sacramento Living History Program (OSLHP) has been guiding visitors on exciting and historical tours of the city, providing a glimpse into our fascinating past. Current walking tours include an underground look at Sacramento - literally. See for the first time the underground network of sidewalks, entryways and buildings that sit below Sacramento. Did you know that Sacramento once sat much lower? Flooding was a problem. But, rather than retreat to higher ground, city fathers instead raised the buildings, leaving behind a virtual underground city. Other tours include Sacramento City: California's Gold Rush Legacy, a look at gold-rush era architecture and the history of Sacramento during the Gold Rush.
