Buy It And Try It: Debbie Meyers Bread Bags

The Debbie Meyers Bread Bags say they'll dramatically extend the life
of your favorite breads. Let's see if it works.

Cynthia Torres teaches Culinary Arts Management at Consumnes River
College. She and her class have already tried the Debbie Meyers Green
Bags and Cold Cuts Bags. They loved the green bags, saying they worked
well on fruits and produce, but they say the Cold Cut Bags didn't keep
meat fresh longer.

They've spent the past week and a half trying out Debbie's latest
invention, the Bread Bags.

"Bread goes bad very quickly," Cynthia said, normally in about four days.

So at $3.49 a loaf, she's excited about the claim that the Bread Bags
will keep it fresh longer.

Cynthia's got all of her favorite bread for our tests: Bagels, naan
pocket bread, freshly backed scones and French bread. She divides it
up, half going into the bread bags, half staying in the original
packaging.

She slides the bread inside, and then folds the top, putting our
samples on a tray and storing them. The box shows an example of bread
being fresh after 11 days, so we came back 11 days later.

First, we start with the French bread. The store bag bread is
obviously moldy, but so is the French loaf in the Bread Bags.

"It's exactly the same," Cynthia said.

Moving onto the bagels, the original bag bagels are hard, but still
appear edible. When we check the Bread Bags, the bagels are a bit
softer.

"They look nice," Cynthia said. "For the bagels, they seem to have worked."

Both of the scone samples have both hardened and appear the same, and
the naan pocket bread samples are also both harder.

Cynthia kept her eye on the samples during our 11 day test, and says
that aside from the bagels, it doesn't appear the Bread Bags keep all
bread fresh longer.

Her advice?

"Buy the bread, put it in the freezer, keep it fresh like that, and
save your money," she said.
