Highway 50 Speed Limit May Be Raised Around Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. (AP) -- California state transportation officials are considering raising the speed limit on U.S. Highway 50 around South Lake Tahoe.

Caltrans spokeswoman Deanna Shoopman says they are reviewing the speed limits between Stateline and Meyers, Calif., where construction has added to traffic delays in recent months.

The limit currently is 35 mph in the city of South Lake Tahoe and 50 in the Meyers area. Shoopman says they either will stay the same or be increased by 5 mph at the conclusion of the current study.

South Lake Tahoe police chief Brian Uhler has mixed feelings about the possibility of faster traffic along the South Shore's main artery. He says public safety is the obvious concern, but he also understands the desire to get from place to place quicker.
