Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Sends Four To The Hospital

ANTELOPE (CBS13) – Four Sacramento County residents, two of them children, were treated Saturday for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sac Metro Fire Department firefighters were called to a home in the 3800 block of Little Rock Drive at around 7:40 a.m. Saturday after the residents complained of nausea, shaking and pain. When firefighters arrived, they found a 23-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl, a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old with the symptoms.

The firefighters recognized the symptoms as carbon monoxide poisoning and took all four residents to the hospital.

"One of the neighbors had gone upstairs to check on them and saw immediately that something wasn't right and called 9-1-1," said Sacramento Metro Fire Department spokesperson Pat Ellis.

Fire officials believe the high carbon monoxide levels were due to a water heater that may not have been venting properly.

The home did not have a carbon monoxide detector. All homes in California are required to be equipped with one.

No other nearby units were affected by the incident.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that accumulates in the blood and can be deadly.
