Bail Increased For Suspect In Crash That Injured Brothers After Toxicology Report
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The woman who crashed into two young boys in Citrus Heights as they walked to school earlier this month was returned to jail Thursday after results of her toxicology test came back positive.
A judge increased her bail to $200,000 on Thursday at the request of the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office and she was booked back into jail. She posted the additional bail and was released again Thursday night.
It was revealed in court Thursday that Bales-Sterba's toxicology report showed she was high on methamphetamine and amphetamine when she allegedly caused the crash that changed the lives of two little boys forever.
According to a prosecutor, Henry Perez-Rocha, 6, faces a long recovery.
"He is in critical condition and he is on life support," Nancy Smith said in court. "Swelling to his brain, damage to his spleen and possible paralysis."
He broke his neck in the crash, Smith said.
"She ran through a solid red light at the intersection where the children were crossing," Smith said.
The prosecutor told the judge Bales-Sterba was driving near Mariposa and Greenback Lane in Citrus Heights on Oct. 5 when she ran a red light and hit a Suburban, forcing it into Henry and his brother Juan, 8, as they walked to school with their mother.
Juan has been released from the hospital. Henry faces a much more uncertain future.
"She does present a danger to the public," the judge said in court Thursday.
