Ceres Police Officer Shoots Alleged Drunk Driver

CERES (CBS13) – A Ceres police officer shot an alleged drunk driver early Friday morning after the driver threatened the life of the officer, according to investigators.

At 2:11 a.m. Ceres police officers responded to the Del Taco Restaurant located at Mitchell Road and Whitmore Avenue regarding a disturbance between two people. As officers arrived, one of the two subjects fled the scene in his car.

Officers pursued the suspect for approximately one mile with their lights and sirens on. The suspect, Martin Moreno, 28, of Ceres turned onto Belleza Court, where an officer performed a pursuit prevention manuever on the suspect vehicle. Shots were then fired at the driver by one of the responding officers.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation and no further information was released.

Moreno was immediately taken into custody and provided medical aid for his injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Moreno will be booked into the Stanislaus County Jail upon his release from the hospital.

None of the Ceres officers were injured. The involved officer was placed on administrative leave per department policy.
