Group Wants Special-Election Vote On Sacramento Kings Arena

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A group is drumming up support in opposition to a new Sacramento Kings arena in downtown Sacramento.

Sacramento Taxpayers Opposed to Pork is looking to block a decision to use parking bonds to finance the arena and intend to put the $258 million subsidy on the ballot.

It would take 35,000 signatures to prompt a special election on the fall ballot, but supporters feel the city should not put itself at that kind of financial risk without the OK from voters.

"We want to know all of the ramifications of it and have the time for people to look at it," said Jim Cathcart.

The Sacramento city clerk says if the arena opponents get enough signature, a special election would be held. The county election's office said it would cost $1.5 million.
