Woman Dies In Police Custody While Being Investigated On Drug Charges

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Sacramento Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a woman who was in custody on drug charges.

The Sacramento Police Department booked the 39-year-old Monday on suspicion of possessing 9 grams of methamphetamine and a small amount of cocaine. Police allege that the woman possessed the controlled substances for sale.

Shortly after 2 a.m. the woman told deputies monitoring the holding tank that she had ingested a controlled substance and was feeling ill.

Emergency workers took her to a hospital, where she became unresponsive. She died at 3:18 a.m.

The identity of the woman has not yet been released and the coroner is working to determine her cause of death.
