Annette Hidalgo is attending the University of Phoenix to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. The Modesto mother of four, who had her first child at age 16, received the opportunity to return to school to obtain her Bachelor's of Science in liberal studies. Hidalgo is one of 30 recipients selected out of more than 160 applicants nationwide to receive a full-tuition scholarship through Boys & Girls Clubs of America and University of Phoenix.

Her children are her inspiration to return to school to pursue her dreams of a higher education. Hidalgo holds leadership positions in a number of organizations including the Parent Teacher Organization at Sylvan Elementary School in Modesto, School Site Council, District Advisory Committee, a local Girl Scout Troop and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County Parent Advisory Council.

"This is something I always wanted to do," she said. "I have that passion. I did put it on hold to be a mom and I felt at the time it wasn't something realistic for me to consider. But I never let go of the longing to become an educator."

With all of her children now attending elementary school, Hidalgo is ready to return to school and feels she is able to put her best effort into her own education.

As for entering the teaching profession, "Ever since I was a kid, I loved to play school. I would make pretend homework sheets and lesson plans and conduct mock classrooms. I was a straight A student and I really enjoyed helping other kids."

Five years ago, Hidalgo worked at a behavioral center for children with autism working in many classroom settings. "Just being a part of that and seeing the difference teachers make in children's lives, I wanted to teach more than ever." Once she obtains this degree, Hidalgo plans on working to pursue a master's degree in educational administration.

"I am an ambitious person and ultimately I would love to be a superintendent of schools. I am a life-long learner and want to keep expanding my education and knowledge."
