POLLOCK PINES (CBS13) – Officials announced Wednesday morning that more than a thousand homes are threatened as crews battle the King Fire near Pollock Pines.
According to Cal Fire, the latest numbers show that the fire has burned about 18,544 acres. Containment still only stands a 5% and 1,632 homes are threatened.
The freeway, in both directions, was closed between Sly Park and Fresh Pond Tuesday evening as the fire threatened to jump across Highway 50. Around 2 p.m. Wednesday, Caltrans announced that the stretch had been reopened, although the number 2 westbound lane will stay closed at least overnight as crews continue their attack.
Cal Fire said on Monday that the fire jumping Highway 50 and heading toward Pollock Pines and Sly Park is the worst-case scenario. Crews spent Tuesday night trying to keep that from happening.
More than 2,500 firefighters are battling the blaze.
Numerous evacuation orders remain in place. Officials ask residents to check this Facebook page for the latest information on evacuations: https://www.facebook.com/KINGFIREPIO.
