Run To Feed The Hungry Draws Nearly 28,000 Participants

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Thousands gathered in East Sacramento for a Thanksgiving Day tradition: Run To Feed The Hungry. It benefits from the generosity of the community and the Sacramento food Bank.

"[I'm] extremely pumped," said Joe Rosendoho, a race participant.

"I'm excited," said Sara Harrah, a runner.

In its 21st year, the run is a fun family tradition that brought out nearly 28,000.

"We were both up at 5 a.m. to get here and we look forward to do it every year," said Rosendoho.

"It's just a fun run, but it's fun to get out there…and celebrate thanksgiving with everybody for a good cause," said Harrah.

And that cause helps so many people in Sacramento County.

"It's changing lives here in Sacramento; all of the funds raised in Run to Feed the Hungry today will be used to support programs such as food, clothing and adult education. We're helping people improve their own situation," said Kelly Siefkin, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Food Bank.

The annual run brings out the creativity -- from wild costumes to crazy hats.

"We try to get a new costume every year. First it was bunny ears, then the full costumes and just have fun," said Michael Hare, a race participant.

This is the largest Thanksgiving Day fun run in the United States.

"That's really cool for our community that Sacramento can show up like that and actually be top of the nation, that's really cool," said Matthew Chacon, a race participant.

The run is a 10k and 5k race.
